Nine other benefits of chiropractic care (guest post)

Benefts of chiropractic care

Blog host’s note: It is always good to read articles on the benefits of chiropractic care not written by chiropractors! This article, written by a non-chiropractor, covers many of the major benefits of regular chiropractic check-ups. It’s great to see it coincide with the top benefits I hear reported in my practice: better quality of sleep, more energy, and a more responsive body. In addition, the study referred to regarding blood pressure was conducted by the National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association.

Perhaps one key benefit not discussed below are the changes in digestive function. Many people report experiencing fewer tummy troubles with proper spinal care. Perhaps that is a post for another day.

Unknown benefits of chiropractic care

How much do you know about chiropractic care and its purposes? If you’re like many, you probably think that visits to the chiropractor are just for people with ongoing acute back pain or those who have injured their back in an accident.

While these are two very good reasons for seeking out chiropractic care, there are many more benefits that chiropractors provide. Most people simply don’t know about how chiropractic care can improve the overall health of your body and (as an added bonus) even provide some mental benefits. Here are some of the lesser known health benefits of seeing a chiropractor.

Reduce pain in the arms, legs, and neck.

Chiropractors aren’t just there to “crack your back.” They can also help with pains in the arms, wrists, shoulders, neck, knees, feet, and ankles. Chiropractic care focuses on keeping the whole body functioning well, and that means if pain extends beyond just your back, your chiropractor will look at other sources of pain.

Avoid serious sports injuries and increase your range of motion.

Whether you’re an exercise fiend or someone who is just starting a fitness regimen, it’s important to avoid the muscle tightness and joint stiffness that can lead to more serious injuries. Stretching after a workout can help, but if your muscles are especially sore, you can see a chiropractor, who will ease your muscle pain by unlocking stiff joints. This will make you feel “looser” and give you a better range of motion when you get back to your workouts. Many former and current professional athletes already enjoy the benefits of chiropractic care.

Feel less stressed.

Visiting a chiropractor helps your muscles relax and also lowers the pressure in your blood vessels, which makes your whole body feel more at ease and minimizes some of the unpleasant physical effects of stress, such as tightness in the shoulders, neck pain, and migraines. Who wouldn’t want the physical and mental benefits of being less stressed?

Get a better night’s sleep.

This goes hand in hand with my previous point about feeling less stressed. Chiropractic care eases both the stress and the physical pain that might be keeping you up at night, so that you can reset your sleep schedule and have more energy during the day.

Better blood circulation.

If your body is out of proper alignment, you’re more likely to pinch or crush a nerve, which can be very painful and dangerous to your health. Having pinched or crushed nerves can also negatively impact your circulation because your blood is not able to flow throughout your body as effectively as it should be able to. By making adjustments and correcting your alignment, chiropractors reduce the chances of you pinching a nerve and improve your blood circulation.

Lower your blood pressure.

If you suffer from high blood pressure, chiropractic care may be a good alternative to blood pressure medication. A study at Rush University has suggested that a readjustment of the Atlas vertebra can normalize blood pressure for patients who have struggled with high blood pressure. Researchers also suggest that a misaligned Atlas vertebra causes the arteries at the base of the skull to contract, and correcting this misalignment lowers a patient’s blood pressure.

Help fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia is a syndrome that involves long-term pain in the joints, muscle, tendons, and other soft tissues. If left untreated, it can lead to sleep problems, fatigue, migraines, and depression. Chiropractic care limits the pain of fibromyalgia and also helps patients improve their cervical and lumbar ranges of motion.

Get at the mechanical source of bursitis.

Bursitis involves the inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs that cushion your joints and can cause aching, stiffness, swelling, and redness. It usually occurs in larger joints and is caused by repetitive motion, so it is something that athletes are at risk of developing. Chiropractors often help the body resolve bursitis by using spine and joint adjustments and sometimes use additional national treatment methods, such as an ice massage.

Reduce the pain of arthritis.

A primary cause of osteo-arthritis is a misalignment of bones that causes joints to be limited in their movement. Through making adjustments, chiropractors can limit the pain associated with arthritis. They can also work with arthritis patients to develop fitness routines that will work for them, if the patient is trying to stay active.

If you’re still unsure about whether chiropractic care could benefit you, you should sit down and talk with a chiropractor about the services they provide. Chiropractic care is a safe, natural way to take care of your entire body and can have significant long-term health benefits.

I love the idea of health instead of just pain relief in chiropractic! One of my favorite things in my practice is when a patient comes in and says “I don’t know why but I’ve been sleeping so much better and had more energy since I’ve been coming in.”
When patients “get” that chiropractic is wellness care their quality of life shoots through the roof!
That being said, not everyone wants a wellness style of chiropractic care and I think that keeping pain patients off a lifetime of pain meds or surgeries is a noble endeavor.
